The First Episode of Slacker and the Man.

I recently participated in the Slacker and The Man kick starter and received a flash drive of the first 59 episodes that previously were locked away. Sadly, I was not a fan of the podcast from the beginning. In my defense, I didn’t know about show until a year ago. I am listening to these for the first time and I’m enjoying the hell out of the classic shows. Being a frequent attendee of the live chats, I find myself constantly having the urge to type responses as I listen. Quickly, I realize there is no chat, it is a pre-recorded show and I sigh at the missed opportunity to join in on the fun. For those of you, like me, that had never listened to these shows before let me give you a little taste.

Episode One: Welcome to “the bullshit we’re going to call a podcast”. The Man was inspired to start a podcast by listening to Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier’s “SModcast” and “The Monsters” which is a local Orlando radio station. With the philosophy that “any jerkoff can have a podcast now, example us”, Slacker and The Man was born. No date is given in the show, but I estimate that it took place in late January 2008. In the beginning, there was no stink studio; it was recorded in The Original Slacker’s bedroom in his parent’s house. And being that the show is located in Florida, where there are no basements, you can’t get any geekier than that. Their first topic of discussion is a movie review of Cloverfield. The consensus was that it seemed like a 75 minute trailer. Then in less than five minutes The Man mentioned Dr. Paul Bearer. AWESOME! Where has this podcast been all my life?! I had been a huge fan of Dr. Paul Bearer and his show, Creature Feature, when I was young and I was overjoyed to hear others like me remember it the way I did with fondness.

Eight minutes and one second into the show and the words, “wanna see my dick?” are uttered. It warms my heart to know that the more things change, the more they stay the same. This is not a punch line or related to any story, just The Man being who he is. Would we really want it any other way?

Next is the very first of many stories involving the Slacker and The Man gang. The gang in this tale consists of The Man, The Original Slacker, Teacher Bill, Pedophile (The Original Slacker’s brother), and Jesus Camp (The Original Slacker’s cousin). It speaks of their holiday tradition of getting drunk and going to the mall shopping for Christmas gifts on the day before Christmas. Did I mention that I usually get an education when listening to this show? I learned the euphemisms “made a pancake” and “cookie nookie” from this story. Warning! Do NOT google these terms; go to urban dictionary if you don’t know the meanings.

We hear “loves the cock” in under fifteen minutes. They move on to a news story. Only the best news from our hosts, it tells of a bomb squad in Sweden called out to disarm a suspicious box only to discover it contains a sex toy.

Compared to today’s standards the episode was very short at only 22 minutes long. But it was still cramped packed (I’m not gay) with geeky goodness, random ramblings, cussing, offensive topics and sexual innuendo. I found it interesting that in the very first show, The Man had the foresight and vision that someday they would have live chats and call in guests. “Bear with us folks, it gets better, I promise, this is our first one.” I can honestly say The Man has lived up to that promise. Even comparing this to episode two, there are subtle changes taking place to improve the show. And now, over 200 episodes strong with some shows lasting over three hours, they continue to entertain and delight their listeners. I will now leave you with the famous last words spoken on the first episode, “…And I’m the Man and I’ll show you my dick.” Classic!

A couple of weeks ago Brent Spiner, who played Data on Star Trek The Next Generation, stated in an interview that he thought that TNG would eventually be rebooted as JJ Abrams did with TOS. That got me to thinking on who I would want to see cast in the various roles of TNG. I think we actually talked about this on Slacker And The Man when the TOS reboot came out, but I can’t remember and am to lazy to look it up right now.

So here is who I would like to see cast as the main character of Star Trek The Next Generation in a reboot film/TV series.

Captain Picard:

Sir Patrick Stewart portrayed Captain Jean Luc Picard in the original TNG show and movies. He did a fine job of it too. While not as suave or impulsive as Kirk, he brought his own unique style to the Captain’s Chair. To take the reigns of the Enterprise D in the reboot we have:

Anthony Stewart Head:

Not only is he British, he also has Stewart in his name. But beyond that Head, who is best known for his role as Giles on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, could bring the determination, class, and air of authority to the role that we’ve come to expect from Captain Picard.

Commander William Riker:

Commander Riker, or Number One as Captain Picard referred to him, was much more of the Kirk type character on TNG. He went on the away missions, slept with the ladies, and was ready and able to fight at the drop of a hat. To reprise him in the reboot we have:

Neal McDonough:

McDonough (known for his roles in Captain America, Star Trek First Contact, and Walking Tall) has that easy going charm that is essential for anyone playing Riker. Slap some dark hair on him and a beard and I think he could pull it off. The fact that he was (briefly) in First Contact can’t hurt either.

LT Commander Data:

Data is a sentient android who yearns to be more human. He fills the role of Second Officer, Science Officer, and Operations Officer. And to take on the monumental task of playing him in our reboot we have:

Cillian Murphy:

Murphy (known as Scarecrow in Batman Begins) has the look and odd personality to play Data.

Lt Commander Geordi La Forge:

Geordi was the Enterprise D’s Chief Engineer. Blind since birth, he was able to see by using a VISOR. My choice to play him is:

Leonard Roberts:

Roberts (was Forrest in Buffy season 4, and D.L. in Heroes) has the look and intelligence to portray Geordi.

LT Worf:

Worf was the first Klingon in Star Fleet. Even though he was raised by humans, was still very dedicated to his Klingon heritage. To play him we have:

Michael Clarke Duncan:

Duncan has the size, look, and acting chops to make a great Worf.

Dr Beverly Crusher:

Aside from being the hottest woman in Star Fleet, Dr Crusher was the Enterprise D’s Chief Medical Officer and sometime love interest for Captain Picard. So to play the part of the intelligent red head we have:

Christina Hendricks:

Beyond the obvious reasons I want Hendricks to play Dr Crusher, she has the look and intelligence to pull it off.

Counselor Troi:

Counselor Troi was the empathic ship’s counselor who dressed as an intergalactic cheerleader until later seasons. To play her we have:

Kiera Knightly:

Knightly has the look and accent to play Counselor Troi. One of the things I remember from the last time I did this casting on the show was casting Knightly as Troi and a couple of people complaining that she couldn’t because her boobs weren’t big enough. I realize that she is smaller breasted than Troi was originally, but that can be digitally enhanced or enhanced with the right bra. I’d rather have someone who’s suited to the role with fake boobs than someone with big ole knockers who isn’t.

So there you have it, my casting of a TNG reboot. What do you think? Who would you cast?

MegaCon 2012 is a wrap and it was awesome. First off I want to congratulate the MegaCon staff on a job well done. All of you who attended in 2011 know what I mean when I say it was a little crowded. So crowded that you could hardly stop to take pics, look at the booths, or talk to people. That was not the case at all this year. They widened the walkways between the booths  and had almost three times the floor space as last year. That alone made the convention itself much more enjoyable. Aside from that MegaCon lived up to years past in the terms of celebrity guests and did an excellent job of keeping the ticket lines down.

The only downside to it being as big and spread out as it was this year is that it makes finding people  a bit harder. But I’ll gladly take that in trade for being able to comfortably move around. But with that being said we did miss several of our favorite costumers this time around. But we did meet some new ones.

Finally got to put a face to the name when we met Pryde from Just A Couple Of Gs (along with most of the rest of their cast). .

As many conventions as I’ve been to I see a lot of the same costumes over and over again. Which I always enjoy seeing, but every now and then it’s nice to see something I haven’t seen before. This is the first time I’ve seen a Barf from Spaceballs. .

For some reason there were several Moon Knights at the con this year.

.

I even went in a half ass Jayne costume one day. Yeah, Jayne isn’t supposed to be shorter than Mal.

That Friday night we had a Karaoke event at O’Shucks Pub on I Drive. Dobbs and I traded rolls that night, as in I was the sober one and he was in full on Party Mode. Cocaine may or may not have been involved.
