The New 52: Mister Terrific #1 Review

Posted in The Man's Blog by slackerandtheman on September 14th, 2011

On this week's episode of Slacker And The Man we reviewed all of last week's New 52 comics from DC Comics. Now I'll be reviewing this week's as I read them.

One thing I have to give Mister Terrific #1 points for right off the bat is that it's the first of DC Comics' New 52 reboot to tell an actual origin story. While a whole lot hasn't changed from his origin in the old DC universe, it's still nice to start a new story about a mostly new character with an origin mixed in with an new, ongoing plot.

The story is solid, the art is good. All in all, I was very pleased with this book and am looking forward to #2.

The New 52: Detahstroke #1 Review

Posted in The Man's Blog by slackerandtheman on September 14th, 2011

On this week's episode of Slacker And The Man we reviewed all of last week's New 52 comics from DC Comics. Now I'll be reviewing this week's as I read them.

This one surprised me. I figured, much like his 3 issue series in Flashpoint, that Deathstroke #1 would be okay but nothing to write home about. How wrong I was.

Deathstroke #1 is an awesome book. It's one of the few New 52 books to be released so far that is a self contained story. It's nothing fancy, Slade takes a contract with some rookie mercenaries, but it's told really well and with awesome art. This book is exactly what I wanted it to be, Deathstroke kicking ass while staying true to what his character should be.

They also get bonus points for not bogging him down with the Titans or his children in the first issue. Although we do meet Rose Wilson in Superboy #1.

Really looking forward to #2 on this one, and I can't wait to see the New 52 Batman and Deathstroke faceoff against each other.

The New 52: Superboy #1 Review

Posted in The Man's Blog by slackerandtheman on September 14th, 2011

On this week's episode of Slacker And The Man we reviewed all of last week's New 52 comics from DC Comics. Now I'll be reviewing this week's as I read them.

When I think of Superboy, there are four versions that come to mind. One is the non-conical young Clark Kent, the other is the one with the leather jacket and a bowl cut who looks like the 90's threw up on him, the Superboy that he became, and finally the Superboy from the Young Justice animated series that debuted last year.

Luckily, Superboy #1 borrows more from the animated Superboy than any of the others. Superboy (which is his only designation so far) is grown in a lab as a secret weapon. He's released prematurely and hijinks ensue.

He really reminds me of the animated Superboy in the sense that he's uncomfortable with the world around him. Everything is new and strange to him. Which, in my opinion, is a good angle for this book to take. It's like they took all of the good things about the other versions of Superboy and mixed them into one.

Needless to say, I'll be back for issue #2.

The New 52: Batwoman #1 Review

Posted in The Man's Blog by slackerandtheman on September 14th, 2011

On this week's episode of Slacker And The Man we reviewed all of last week's New 52 comics from DC Comics. Now I'll be reviewing this week's as I read them.

Maybe it's because I'm not that familiar with this Batwoman's history, which I shouldn't have to be with this being a reboot and all, but I didn't care for Batwoman #1 at all. The art was odd, the story was disjointed, and the familiar characters that were there felt like they were forced on me in an attempt to make me like this book because Blackmask and Batman show up.

Save your money on this one folks, not worth buying. I also think that this is the first of DC Comics New 52 books that I won't be reading issue #2.

But hey, some people juggle geese...

The New 52: Red Lantern #1 Review

Posted in The Man's Blog by slackerandtheman on September 14th, 2011

On this week's episode of Slacker And The Man we reviewed all of last week's New 52 comics from DC Comics. Now I'll be reviewing this week's as I read them.

It's almost hard to take Red Lantern #1 seriously right off the bat. Atrocitus' cat, who is also somehow a Red Lantern, attacks a spaceship. Yeah you read that right, Atrocitus has a cat who is also a Red Lantern. We're not talking some sort of sentient feline species. From all appearances in this book, it's a common earth-like house cat. Except it can vomit blood that shapes to it's will....

Once you get past that, the book's not all bad. The set up reveals that Atrocticus is going to be a Punisher like character in the DC Universe, punishing the wicked and defending the innocent.

I'm going to stick around and see what happens in issue #2, but I honestly don't see this series lasting long unless they really kick it into high gear in the next couple of issues.

The New 52: Green Lantern #1 Review

Posted in The Man's Blog by slackerandtheman on September 14th, 2011

On this week's episode of Slacker And The Man we reviewed all of last week's New 52 comics from DC Comics. Now I'll be reviewing this week's as I read them.

Much like the Batman books, it seems as if quite a bit of the more recent events surrounding the Green Lantern books has carried over into DC Comics New 52 reboot. We know from this book that Sinestro was recently made a Green Lantern again, Ganthet seems to be the same Ganthet as before the reboot, Carol still has a Star Sapphire ring, and Hal Jordan was recently discharged as a Green Lantern.

Green Lantern #1 gives us a look at how Sinestro is dealing with being a Green Lantern again, and at how Hal Jordan is dealing with not being a Green Lantern. It seems as if this book is going to be shared between Sinestro and Hal. Which is fine by me, both are interesting enough that I want to see what's going on with both of them.

Great art in this book, but not a lot of action in the first issue. It was more of a story building issue, but the ending will definitely make you want to read #2.

The New 52: Batman And Robin #1 Review

Posted in The Man's Blog by slackerandtheman on September 14th, 2011

On this week's episode of Slacker And The Man we reviewed all of last week's New 52 comics from DC Comics. Now I'll be reviewing this week's as I read them.

Batman And Robin is another one of DC's New 52 that I've been excited for. Besides being a huge Batman fan, I've followed the book even before the reboot, and really enjoyed it. A big part of what I enjoyed about the old book was the interaction between Dick Grayson, who was Batman at the time, and Damian Wayne, who is Bruce Wayne's son and the current Robin.

After reading the first issue of this new series, it's shaping up like the interaction between Bruce, who is Batman in this book again, and Damian is going to be just as compelling as Dick and Damian. This first issue does a really good job of setting the tone for Batman and Robin's relationship. This is new ground for Batman, because instead of having a ward or sidekick, he has to deal with being the actual father of Robin. Needless to say this makes for an interesting atmosphere in this book.

The art was good and the story line is average for what you would expect from a Batman And Robin book, and both are good enough to bring me back for issue #2. But the interaction between Bruce and Damian is what I'm really looking forward to watching develop.
